What is Narrow AI?

Narrow AI, also known as Weak AI, refers to artificial intelligence that is designed and trained to perform a specific task or a limited set of tasks. Unlike General AI (AGI), which would have the ability to understand, learn, and apply intelligence across a broad range of activities like a human, Narrow AI is focused on one particular area.

For example, a Narrow AI system might be able to play chess at a superhuman level, recognize faces, drive a car, or recommend products online, but it cannot perform tasks outside its defined capabilities. These systems operate under strict limitations and do not possess the ability to adapt beyond their training.

Common examples of Narrow AI include virtual assistants like Siri or Alexa, recommendation algorithms on streaming services, and the AI behind autonomous vehicles. Despite their limitations, Narrow AI systems are extremely powerful within their designated domains and have widespread applications across industries.
